The Seven Lokas

‌As per Vedic cosmology, there are fourteen worlds of existence in this Universe or Brahmanda. Seven above the plane of earth and seven below. The seven upper levels of existence are called Vyarthis or Lokas. The highest Loka is Satya-loka. This is where Brahma or the Supreme Consciousness exists. This realm is free from the cycle of birth and death.
‌Under this level of existence is Tapa-loka. The immortals beings reside here. They are considered to be highly knowledgeable, pure, and enlightened souls and they can easily travel to the uppermost realm, the Satya-loka.
‌The next world is Jana-loka. Where realized beings live. This is the realm of highly intelligent and spiritual souls. These spiritual souls have amazing powers. They can travel among all the lokas with the speed of thought.
‌The fourth level of existence is Mahar-loka, the abode of great rishis and sages. These are beings who through a long period of tapasya have become greater than the devatas.
‌The fifth level of existence is Svar-loka or Indra-loka. A world where resides deities like Indra, other devatas, gandharvas, sages, and apsaras. ‌
The sixth world is the Bhuvar-loka where we can find the Sun, Moon, Stars, and other planets. This realm is also known as Pitru-loka. This is the first place where the soul reaches after exiting from the earth and from here the further journey of the soul is decided. This world is inhabited by semi-divine beings who may occasionally be a part of the human world as well.
Under all these realms is Bhur-loka or Martya-loka, the seventh plane of existence. This is the planet earth where mortal beings live. Human beings along with all the other species of life live here.
The Satya-loka or the  Brahma-loka (the abode of creator God Brahma) is considered to be the place of origin of every soul. A soul can not stay permanently in any realm except the Satya-loka, the uppermost realm, and moves constantly from one plane to another. Only after attaining moksha or enlightenment, the soul goes back to its origin and never returns.
